Gestalt Therapy for Palliative Care

In the 1940s, Friedrich and Laura Perls developed the famous Gestalt Therapy within the school of Gestalt Psychology, which was developed in 1912 by Max Wertheimer. It draws inspiration from existential theorists such as Søren Kierkegaard, Friedrich Nietzsche, Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir. This psychotherapy course lays out the practice-based approach of gestalt therapy that appreciates individuals as more than the sum of their parts.

In the Humanistic School of Psychology, existential theories paved the way for gestalt therapy to formulate a less robotic and more integrative approach to psychological support. This psychotherapy initiative emphasizes the present moment, the client’s experience and the importance of personal responsibility. The client-therapist relationship focuses on helping individuals develop self-awareness and improve their emotional and psychological wellbeing.
During gestalt therapy, the therapist works with the client to understand and identify their thoughts and feelings that are occurring in the here and now. Since the emphasis is not on the past or future events, the goal is to develop an awareness of what is happening in the current situation of focus. Gestalt therapy additionally contextualizes personal responsibility as clients develop an awareness of their own behaviors and take responsibility for their actions. In addition to traditional talk therapy, gestalt therapy also incorporates creative techniques, such as role-playing and dream work, to help clients better understand their emotional selves and inner child.
For palliative care, gestalt therapy has been found to be effective for a range of conditions, including depression, anxiety, stress, meaninglessness, relationship issues, traumatic injury, suicidal ideation and other chronic mental health conditions.
